Cool Shit 5/28

You'd think some of these Marvel superheroes would have killed a bunch more people, but have to realize, at the end of the day, it's comic books we're talking about.

Another preview of the summer television season, although this one is extremely comprehensive.

And then here's an article predicting which five new fall shows are going to be hits. If I were a betting man, I'd bet against all five.

How did the empire construct a second Death Star so much quicker than the first? This gives some sound economic theory as to why, but I think another possibility is that they were being built concurrently - or more specifically the plan wasn't to rule the galaxy with one Death Star, but with many, and so the construction started with multiple projects.

Wow, watching this trailer for a David Foster Wallace movie, I'm not sure if I should be excited or offended by it. I can appreciate people wanting to bring this to the screen, but I'm not sure you can capture the complexities of the man in a simple two hour film.

Apparently breaking down a ship is extremely dangerous and expensive. So you take them to Bangladesh!

Aside from the melodramatic headline that David Duchovny "cried" when he read the latest X-Files script, there's some more information here about the show.

More Serial news - apparently they are currently producing two narratives, so there won't be as long a wait between season two and season 3.

Chuck Palahniuk on writing the Fight Club 2 comic book. I still think it's really not a good idea.

Cool Shit 2/20

Watch drone footage of Niagra Falls in all its icy glory:

I know it sounds crazy, but rebooting a movie like Shaft is akin to rebooting Jaws; it wasn't just a moive, it was a cultural phenomenon that made it that much bigger than it was, and that's something you can't duplicate. Shaft wasn't great because it was a good movie; the plot is clunky at times. It is great because it took what at the time was a different perspective, and gave it a "don't give a fuck" attitude. It missed in the 2000 remake, and I'm willing to be it will be missed again. We live in a different time, with different problems; a movie like Shaft could work, tackling the issues of today, but I don't have hope that that's what is going to happen.

A little more detail about the shenanigans during the SNL 40th. By now you've probably heard the Eddie Murphy almost doing Cosby story. And there are a lot of theories out there about why or why not. Mine is that had Murphy opened that door, it would have given people the opportunity to compare his past daliances with women with Cosby, and that's something he didn't want to dredge up all over again. I can't blame him.

More evidence to suggest the Oscars are not about finding the quality of film; this focuses on weird rules that keeps some movies in, and eliminates the chances of others.

A new Alien movie has at least been given the opportunity to take its next steps (I'm still not 100%
positive it will happen). Here is a look at how they might work around the muddled story that both Alien 3 & 4 have taken us to, as well as the awful, terrible no good Prometheus.

Continuing with Alien, here we also have some pros and cons of Neil Blomkamp's involvement. Personally, while I enjoy his vision, I'm not sure he's the right type to write the story.

Enjoy a good beer? Here are the steps you have to take to get your hands on some of the most sought after beers in the country.

Fight Club 2? In comic form? Check out the first 6 pages if you'd like, or you can simply ignore this exists and keep the original in its pure form in your head. And I really hope this doesn't end as being a dream in the narrator's head (who yes, has a name in this sequel).
