My favorite Top 100 Movie Characters - Part 4

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Alright - here's the grand finale. Remember, these are my favorite characters, so there's no arguing. You can mock and belittle, but no arguing...

25. Jason (Todd Armstrong, Jason and the Argonauts)
24. James Daulton (Patrick Swayze, Road House)
23. Dutch (Arnold Schwartzenegger, Predator)
22. Blondie (Clint Eastwood, The Good, the Bad, the Ugly)
21. Lula Fortune (Laura Dern, Wild at Heart)
20. Lieutenant Colonel Mike Barnsby (Harrison Ford, Force 10 from Navarone)

If you haven't figured it out by now, I really love the very average WWII movie. The only way I can explain it is that I saw it hundreds of times at an impressionable age. What can I say?

19. Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin, Midnight Run)

This movie deserves much more love. It showed us DeNiro can do comedy (with a decent script - which absolves him from We're No Angels) and probably was a driving force in getting Grodin his talk show.

18. Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers, The Pink Panther)

17. Robin Hood (Errol Flynn, The Adventures of Robin Hood)
16. Jim Malone (Sean Connery, The Untouchables)
15. Angelo Pappas (Gary Busey, Point Break)

I'm not saying I cry every time I see him get shot at the air strip, but I'm not ready to say I don't either.

14. Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer, Top Secret)

I have to admit, I like this movie better than Airplane. I think it's simply goofier, if that's possible.

13. Rufus Excalibur Ffolkes (Roger Moore, Ffolkes)

Ffolkes is fantastic. He's such a misogynist - to a fault. It's pretty clear he's playing the character as gay, but not overtly so as to turn off a late 70s audience. Anthony Perkins also shines as the villain who takes over an oil rig. Why Hollywood hasn't turned to this movie for a remake is beyond me. Dial out the misogyny if you must, give it an eco-terrorist flavor, and you have the makings for a decent little action picture. Heck, call it Under Siege III and you have a built in audience. Just make sure I get my exec producer credit.

12. Capt. 'Trapper John' McIntyre (Elliot Gould, M*A*S*H)
11. Toddorbert Guzinsky (Bill Dwyer, Ski School 2)

The epic argument between my friends and I is which Ski School is funneier - 1 or 2? I say 2 wins easily because of Toddorbert. It's really no contest. Then I have other friends who look at me weird for talking this movie up so much. Losers.

10. Martin Brody (Roy Scheider, Jaws)
9. Han Solo (Harrison Ford, Star Wars)
8. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss, Close Encounters of the Third Kind)
7. Buckaroo Bonzai (Peter Weller, Buckaroo Bonzai)

Wherever you go, there you are. I was so mad at the end of Buckaroo Bonzai when it teased that we'd see him again, in further adventures. Here I sit, still waiting. It still didn't stop me from buying this movie on VHS though.

6. Chris Knight (Val Kilmer, Real Genius)

In my head, Kilmer is a comic genius. He moved far away from comedy though after the mid 80s, coming back to it recently in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. There have also been rumors of a Real Genius sequel, which I'm not sure how to feel about. Would Kilmer reprise his role? Would he bea professor then? It would kind of destroy the vibe the first one was going for, wouldn't it?

5. Jack Burton (Kurt Russell, Big Trouble in Little China)

I love Burton, and love how he is the perfect anti-hero - in the sense that he really is simply an observer to teh world he is thrust into, and does nothing heroic (save the end. I heard Carpenter say once the producers made him rewrite the ending for Burton to be heroic so audiences would like him more. Too bad.

4. Capt. Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce (Donald Sutherland, M*A*S*H)
3. Quint (Robert Shaw, Jaws)
2. Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford, Raiders of the Lost Ark)
1. James Bond (Sean Connery et al,)

What can I say? I even like Moonraker.

The only complaint I could possibly lodge is that number one should read:

1. James Bond (George Lazenby et al)

Because we all know GL is the best Bond.

Ski School 1 is clearly better. It first paired the brilliant comic duo of Dean Cameron and Stuart Franklin who later starred in the underrated TV comedy "They Came from Outer Space". So the "correct" favorite is probably Dave Marshak (Dean Cameron, Ski School 1, 2)

The characters in Ski School 2 are way better than 1. Marshak also didn't have the balls he had in 2. Plus, 2 has a NAMBLA joke. Might be the only movie in the history of film to cross that line.

And Dwyer is a comic god.
