The Beastie Boys' Short Film

I am a Beastie Boys fan. Have been since License to Ill came out. And, while I know this sounds like bragging, I can also say I liked them when Paul's Boutique FIRST came out. Not during that time everyone clamored for it in the mid 90s after Check Your Head came out. No, I'm talking about when it first came out, when CDs were the "wave of the future," and cassettes were still rocking. My copy was red.

Anyway, yes, I've fallen off the map a bit with some of their later stuff (meaning everything after Hello Nasty), but I'll always appreciate them as artists, and always argue that Paul's Boutique is one of the top 5 most influential items of all time. So when I hear about some sort of fictional short film based on the song/video "Fight for Your Right to Party," I'm excited. And now that the cast has been announced, I think everyone is about to get excited. Check it out here.

And, just because...

Monster Baby Unleashed On Pistachio Town (i.e. Vote For Our Video)!

Why is the adorably chubby baby destroying a scale model of Boise, Idaho?

Why do the denizens of this city more closely resemble Pistacia vera rather than Homo Sapien?

How can you, a commoner of above-average intelligence and physical beauty help some creative types delude themselves into thinking they’re geniuses because they can win a few cash prizes?

Those questions can be answered after the jump…

The Contest

Goose, myself, and several other idiots are part of The Nectar of the Gods. We work on short films to entertain ourselves, and on occasion, others.

Most of our work has been part of film challenges where you have a weekend to make a short movie. Some of those have been quite successful, with our films won numerous awards and been screened at festivals in New York City and San Jose.

But we’ve started entering online video contests and have been even more successful. Which means cash. So far, we’ve earned 6 large by shilling roast beef and spitting box wine. By the way, we’re eligible for the Grand Prize of the Boxed Wine contest, which will also involve you voting for us. Stay tuned for that.

But the contest at hand involves the good people at Wonderful Pistachios. You may have seen some of their commercials involving E-List celebs (Levi Johnston, Wee Man, Big Pussy). But this one’s probably the best:

The Grand Prize is $25,000 and an airing of our commercial on TV, hopefully during Glee. The winner is the video that gets the most votes out of the 10 Finalists. Coincidentally, out of nearly a thousand submitted videos, we are one of those 10.

So we need your help.

We can’t (i.e. won’t) promise you a cut of the money, but you will have our undying gratitude and a 2-week moratorium on watching you while you sleep. And you can’t really put a price on that.

The Voting

Unfortunately, it’s kinda convoluted. We appreciate your patience in reading these steps and following them exactly. If you have any issues, drop us a line at thepopcorntrick@gmail.com.

To View & Vote:

  1. The latest we’ve heard is that you DO NOT need to be logged into YouTube.
You'll need a YouTube account. You can create one here: http://www.youtube.com/create_account?next=None
  2. Go to http://www.getcrackin.com/contest (Ignore the video that starts playing. It's just a promo)
  3. Click the "Vote" link at the top of the page between "Home" & "Results". (Again ignore the video that starts playing. It's probably one of the other Finalists)
  4. Click the "Godzilla_Final_30.mov" movie (There's 10 videos, but 9 per YouTube "page", so you may need to click on the ">" button to find our video on Page 2)
  5. Click the "Thumbs Up" button to register your vote for us. If it worked, the "Thumbs Down" button should grey out.
  6. You can vote ONCE per day per video through Wednesday, December 16th.

The Other Entry

To view the Babyzilla one, you’ll need to follow the rules above (talk about carrot-dangling).

This is the other video we created that follows a rakishly mustachioed stunt man as he risks life, limb, and anti-freeze to get to the sweet, sweet inner meat of a pistachio:

The Ancient Art of the Spit Take

Like the best oral traditions, it’s a gift handed down from one generation to the next.  I remember fondly sitting upon Grandpa’s knee while he spat prune juice into my eyes after I told him a really good knock-knock joke

After the jump find out just what the hell I’m talking about.  And find out how a few clicks of the mouse can help some impoverished cinematic auteurs put berets and cigarettes on the table.

The Contest

As I’ve written before, Goose, myself, and several other idiots are part of The Nectar of the Gods.  We work on short films to entertain ourselves, and on occasion, others.  Most of our work has been part of film challenges where you have a weekend to make a short movie.  Some of those have been quite successful, with our films won numerous awards and been screened at festivals in New York City and San Jose.

But that pales in comparison to the 4 large (i.e. $4000 American) we won recently for our efforts shilling delicious roast beef via YouTube video. Here’s what happens when you combine a taxidermied bear (obtained in a Craig’s List heist) with acting best described as “Malfunctioning Disney animatronic figure”:

And here’s a great shot of the ceremony where we were bestowed the cash.

We were flush with success, hypnotized by the dollar signs in our eyes, and full to overflowing with inspiration in our loins.  So we did what any overreaching creative group would do...

We moved on to boxed wine.

The good people at Black Box Wine are running an internet video contest with the theme entitled “You Got Boxed”.  As in, “Hey asshole, you know that fancy wine you’re sipping and spitting out and praising because you’re a pretentious douchebag?  Well, it came from a box.  Now who’s the asshole?  You, that’s who.”

We took that humble seed of an idea and rained down our own twisted take on it and covered it in the dirt of genius.  Before I delve farther into the unique nature of the spit take, let’s take care of the important stuff.

Viewing and Voting

You can view our masterpiece by going HERE.

To vote for it, you must first register.

You may vote once per day.  Let's use that.  Daily.

Any and all votes you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  THANKS!

And if you’re curious about following future efforts and possibly spitting on someone (on film), you can become a fan of The Nectar of the Gods on Facebook.

Catharsis

So we knew the spit take scenes would be funny.  But as it turned out, I wildly underestimated how much fun it would be to participate and to observe.

From the moment that  first drop of wine left the first mouth and landed on the first lapel, we were physically doubled over with laughter.

After a while, the process crossed an imaginary line between humor and something deeper, something more cathartic.  We were being told that it was not just OK, not just encouraged, but MANDATORY, that you spit wine on close friends and strangers dressed in fancy clothes.  “Thrift-store fancy” was how I described it to our repertory company, but ridiculous fancy is still fancy.

Who knew that breaking a societal taboo we’re taught from early on could be this liberating?

It’s possible I’m reading too much into this.  But it felt like there was something more than mere jocularity taking place.

Behind the Scenes

Here’s my favorite behind-the-scenes video where we work with some folks who are long on style and short on the ability to keep a straight face when phrases like “sexy baked potato” are thrown around.  You can find other videos here.

And here are a few of my favorite pictures.  You can see more pictures from myself, Goose, and The Baron.  You may need to be Facebook friends with the appropriate person to see them.

Look - we made a movie!

Everyone wants to be a star.

For the past few years, Cline and myself, along with a few other friends have gotten off our couches and participated in some short film challenges, in hopes of making a ton of money so we can then retire and do this for a living. While that scenario hasn't exactly played out the way we thought it would, we have met with some varying levels of success.

Anyway, a couple of months ago, we made a film in 24 hours for the Philadelphia chapter of Film Racing contest. The requirements for the movie:

Theme: Bully
Prop: A rose

These two elements were sent to us Friday night at 10:00, and had to be included in the final film, which had to be dropped off 10:00 Saturday night. Our film, titled, "Vicious Circle" can be seen right here:

"Vicious Circle" and the other films are all viewable at the link above.

Why does all this matter? Because we are now eligible for the audience award (I have no idea what that entails) for our city - and that's where you come in. Please watch, and if you think it's all kinds of awesome, you can vote for it here.

We kindly thank you for your support, and also appreciate you sending it along to your friends and/or large groups of people.
