The FireCorn TrickPop SideChat: Podcast #3, or “Hitting the post like it owes us the vig”

Here are your segments:

  1. Proposing segments (META!)
  2. How would we describe ourselves naked?
  3. What is another word for a woman’s most holy of holes?
  4. How about some signs you could add to your yard to annoy your conservative neighbor across the street? Hypothetically.

Also, we all take turns trying to “hit the post”. That  is an obscure bit of radio DJ terminology relating to the obnoxious habit of talking over the start of a song, but shutting up prior to the first syllable of the first word of the first lyric.

And we recorded it on an iPad.

Check out the “OUR PODCAST” section on the right for details about getting the podcast via iTunes. Or you can download it directly.

Feedback? We love it. Let us know what you think at thepopcorntrick@gmail.com

After the jump, I’ve added some supplementary videos to help you fully understand and appreciate our art. Enjoy.

I couldn’t find any proof of what supposedly happens the first time you snowboard. There are a lot of snowboarding videos with the word “gay” in the title, but none better than this.

Hang in till the end. It’s worth it.

One of Stern’s favorite recurring bits is mocking the traditional DJ patter, including “hitting the post”. This is a taste of that.

I miss Artie.
SOMEONE HIRE THIS GUY!

Couldn’t find any Japanese beer/STD hybrid ads, but hopefully an ad for what looks like Japanese kiddie beer will make up for that oversight.

I wish I were a Japanese child.

Apparently, there’s something resembling a Scott Bakula fan club. Their creativity cannot be denied. Their spelling and grammar however, are eminently deniable.

Oh, so that’s how “Waited” is spelled.

This one’s for Shane. And that other guy.

This is barely consensual.

This guy’s doing the Lord’s work. And apparently the Lord likes when people explain a joke.

Sigh.

The Popcorn Side Trick Chat: Podcast #2, or “How else is Cline stupid?”

…And we’re back. Back scrambling. Back in black. Black in the back.

…And I’ll stop that before I get too racial.

We recorded another, dare I say, hilarious podcast. This time we’re joined by an unnamed, mostly silent 5th member. While adorable, he or she, is a bit timid on the mike. And for that, we are grateful.

In the place of telethon skits, we now have intimate behind-the-scenes glimpses into our camaraderie. Mostly, we make fun of each other. Original, huh? Truly, we are trailblazers of humorous gentlemen.

And we recorded it on an iPad.

Check out the “OUR PODCAST” section on the right for details about getting the podcast via iTunes. Or you can download it directly.

Thank goodness we never had a chance to deliver any of our bad pickup  lines to Black Girl Superhero. She would have just thrashed us.

Though if she let her guard down a bit, I think one or two of them might have melted her cold, cold heart.

As a random comeback, it’s fine. But as a superhero catchphrase, “Mmmm-hmmm…” needs some work.

This is, by far, the worst place I’d ever want to do sign language. This guy has issues…

I’m calling bullshit. If these guys are deaf, how are they lip-synching so sexily. I mean, accurately.

These guys have SWAG!

This does raise the very valid question of how studio audiences reacted to Very Special Episodes. Though it’s criminal that there’s no Gordon Jump reactions. Maybe one of them is his grandson. Probably the one on the left.

I included this solely to piss off 2 of our podcasters. I mean…

  1. It’s totally understandable that 2 of the 4 “competitors” had their nugget count more than doubled by the 2 others.
  2. Also, there’s no way that said podcasters could outdo these guys.
  3. And finally, it’s totally acceptable that 2 nuggets were left in the tray.
Also, this could have been sped up more. Also, the normal speed audio was somehow disconcerting.

That’s all for this episode. Come back next time, won’t you?

The Popcorn Trick and Fireside Chat Have an Alien (Podcast) Baby and It Is Awesome

Long ago, and in a basement not that far away, there was a podcast called Fireside Chat. As podcasts go, it was, as the French say, très passable.

The Fireside Chat guys are real nice guys. Not terribly interesting, but again, real real nice.

They told us about this podcasting thing, then we pretty much perfected it.

As a favor to them, we invited them for a podcast summit. And as a favor to us, they taught us about shorter segments. And skits. And which animals should be larger.

And we recorded it using an iPad.

Check out the “OUR PODCAST” section on the right for details about getting the podcast via iTunes. Or you can download it directly.

Enjoy.

A true Walken impersonator. “Your car is alive!”

Not racist at all.

What some people would do with invisibility: The Invisible Bicycle Helmet | Fredrik Gertten from Focus Forward Films on Vimeo.

And what some other people would do with invisible girls.

This has nothing to do with the podcast itself, but we all watched it and laughed before we recorded it.

Podcast 13.01 – Wang Oscar Frazier

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on you.  Seriously, I’m not taking the fall for this.

What was I talking about? Oh yes, we done did it again.

We squeezed out another steaming pile of podcast.  Roll around in it and as we like to say in the biz, enjoy yourself.  Just don’t get all demanding and expect us to have seen the Oscar-nominated movies we wax rhapsodically about.

Also, if you’re a dude and bored of euphemisms for, then this podcast came along at EXACTLY the right time.

After the jump a bunch of tangentially related ephemera.

If you aren’t already subscribed, search iTunes for “Popcorn Trick” or click here.

  • Intro music:

  • Bumper music:

  • My “The Best” is the NotWaltFrazier Twitter account that may only amuse me. But it amuses me A LOT.
    • The obvious pairing of Walt Frazier with Norm Crosby to sell light beer. Also, I think the 3rd actor is the nerdy guy from Bachelor Party who negotiated with the pimp.

    • A slightly more urban take on Walt “Clyde” Frazier

  • Goose’s “The Best” was Matt Taibbi’s “Griftopia”.  Here’s a clip of him shilling another book on The Daily Show.

    • The Fighter is the only Oscar movie I’ve seen so far, and I loved Melissa Leo’s performance in it. So here is her slightly nutty acceptance speech from The even nuttier Golden Globes:

    • And her getting hit on, HARD, SORTA, by Ned Beatty in her younger days on Homicide:

    • Thankfully neither of us saw this video of penis names set to the tune of “We Didn’t Start the Fire”

    • This is part of the very NSFW clip from Havoc that James Franco better make reference to on Oscar night.
    • Given the chance to narrowly target one potential listener, Goose chose Obama (or “that guy in Egypt”). I chose Alison Brie. You tell me who made the right call:

    • Weird that Goose didn’t want this kind of scene to potentially break out if we recorded around the piano:

Or it could get cleverly raunchy like this scene:

    • This clip mentions “penis”, but doesn’t show his leg. Hmmm….

    • John Goodman does what he does best. Sing.

    • Anne Heche her first (saucy) scene on Another World with a “That Guy” character actor,

Podcast 12.002 – Loud Refrigerators, Just Letting it Be, and Boobicon

Goose packed up his Gateway 2000 laptop and microphones so we could go mobile with this one.  Either Goose’s wife can’t handle high levels of mirth or there’s possibly some other explanation.

Irregardless (my hot new word for 2011), our itch to record podcasts has again flared up.

After the jump comes a lot of audio/visual references to references we made.

If you aren’t already subscribed, search iTunes for “Popcorn Trick” or click here.

UPDATE: It’s showing up in some people’s iTunes, but not others. What worked for me was right-clicking “The Popcorn Trick” in the Podcasts section and choosing “Show all available episodes”.  Also, removing and re-adding the podcast should work.

    Enjoy yourself.

A live version of the intro/outro music Goose chose:

The full list of movies that I extracted from Comcast On Demand and sent to Goose (note the solitary exclamation point by Hot Dog):

    • Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid
    • Cop & 1/2
    • Darjeeling Limited
    • Deck the Halls
    • Great Outdoors
    • Hot Dog: The Movie (YES!)
    • Jack (Robin Williams as a kid in an adult's body)
    • Loch Ness (Danson investigates Nessie)
    • Nell
    • Nine Lives (Paris Hilton trapped in a Scottish castle)
    • Radio
    • Robot Holocaust
    • The Rock
    • Ski School
    • Ski Patrol
    • Street Fighter
    • Taxi
    • Three O'clock High
    • Time Guardian (Dean Stockwell, Carrie Fisher)
    • You Belong to Me (Lifetime movie w/ Shannon Elizabeth: Alex discovers that her young colleague Michael has an obsessive interest in her. Driven by her rejection, he attempts murder-suicide. She survives, he does not. He returns from the grave and she must fight his supernatural power)

The original storyboard for Dolly Parton’s “Straight Talk”:

Because we mentioned Paul Harvey, here’s possibly the best spoof of his unique delivery and aesthetic style:

“Be that as it may, Alex, those people have never been in my kitchen”

Here are both of the Gylne Tider videos:

And an example of what Michael Winslow could have done, if he were only given the chance:

And what may warrant its own blog post/podcast at some point soonish, the most underrated celebrity all-star charity video:

A trailer for what should have been Sherilyn Fenn’s primary Gylne Tider credit:

A trailer for Goose’s favorite thing of 2010:

Could not find an embeddable clip of “Louie”, but watch the poker scene and prepare to be blown away.  It manages to be simultaneously funny, insightful, moving, and then funny again.

    Goose’s favorite album of 2010:

    Cline’s favorite album of 2010:

Saw this live and it was awesome (“I don’t know. Take it easy, bro.”):

Goose made a brief mention of the pool scene. We use a GoPro camera for that scene.  This is all a circuitous excuse to show this awesome video of a GoPro attached to a turtle:

The Ancient Art of the Spit Take

Like the best oral traditions, it’s a gift handed down from one generation to the next.  I remember fondly sitting upon Grandpa’s knee while he spat prune juice into my eyes after I told him a really good knock-knock joke

After the jump find out just what the hell I’m talking about.  And find out how a few clicks of the mouse can help some impoverished cinematic auteurs put berets and cigarettes on the table.

    P1040779

    The Contest

As I’ve written before, Goose, myself, and several other idiots are part of The Nectar of the Gods.  We work on short films to entertain ourselves, and on occasion, others.  Most of our work has been part of film challenges where you have a weekend to make a short movie.  Some of those have been quite successful, with our films won numerous awards and been screened at festivals in New York City and San Jose.

But that pales in comparison to the 4 large (i.e. $4000 American) we won recently for our efforts shilling delicious roast beef via YouTube video. Here’s what happens when you combine a taxidermied bear (obtained in a Craig’s List heist) with acting best described as “Malfunctioning Disney animatronic figure”:

And here’s a great shot of the ceremony where we were bestowed the cash.

From left: Carl T. Bear, Goose, myself, and Shane.  Not pictured: Evan, our collective boners for actually winning an oversized novelty check.

    DSCN0702

We were flush with success, hypnotized by the dollar signs in our eyes, and full to overflowing with inspiration in our loins.  So we did what any overreaching creative group would do...

We moved on to boxed wine.

The good people at Black Box Wine are running an internet video contest with the theme entitled “You Got Boxed”.  As in, “Hey asshole, you know that fancy wine you’re sipping and spitting out and praising because you’re a pretentious douchebag?  Well, it came from a box.  Now who’s the asshole?  You, that’s who.”

We took that humble seed of an idea and rained down our own twisted take on it and covered it in the dirt of genius.  Before I delve farther into the unique nature of the spit take, let’s take care of the important stuff.

    Viewing and Voting

You can view our masterpiece by going HERE

To vote for it, you must first register.

You may vote once per day.  Let's use that.  Daily.

Any and all votes you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  THANKS!

And if you’re curious about following future efforts and possibly spitting on someone (on film), you can become a fan of The Nectar of the Gods on Facebook.

    Catharsis

So we knew the spit take scenes would be funny.  But as it turned out, I wildly underestimated how much fun it would be to participate and to observe.

From the moment that  first drop of wine left the first mouth and landed on the first lapel, we were physically doubled over with laughter.

After a while, the process crossed an imaginary line between humor and something deeper, something more cathartic.  We were being told that it was not just OK, not just encouraged, but MANDATORY, that you spit wine on close friends and strangers dressed in fancy clothes.  “Thrift-store fancy” was how I described it to our repertory company, but ridiculous fancy is still fancy.

Who knew that breaking a societal taboo we’re taught from early on could be this liberating?

It’s possible I’m reading too much into this.  But it felt like there was something more than mere jocularity taking place.

    Behind the Scenes

Here’s my favorite behind-the-scenes video where we work with some folks who are long on style and short on the ability to keep a straight face when phrases like “sexy baked potato” are thrown around.  You can find other videos here.

And here are a few of my favorite pictures.  You can see more pictures from myself, Goose, and The Baron.  You may need to be Facebook friends with the appropriate person to see them.

An entertaining Oscar night on Twitter

I realize I'm beginning to sound like a shill for Twitter, and want to preface this article by saying I'm not. I certainly will, and if you have the means, or just want to forward this to the Twitter offices I'm all for it, but as of right now I'm just a big fan.

I will also say Twitter is not for everyone, and that is evident in the daily requests I get of people trying to sale me their get rich quick schemes on there. I wish there was some way to eliminate the riff raff like that from Twitter, but until then, I just put up with it. Twitter is not easy to figure out, and I myself am not 100% sure of its value.

But last night gave me more than a glimpse of its potential...

Following a live event on Twitter can be difficult, but the level of difficulty is completely up to you. That's because Twitter allows you to choose who you want to follow, so you can manage the number of "tweets" (yes I think that's a stupid word but I think it's part of the social online vernacular, so I'm going with it) you'll receive. Now, with a live event, tweets usually get ramped up since people are reacting immediately. So when that Japanese guy name dropped Styx classic song Mr. Roboto last night, my page exploded with reaction (all good by the way).

(It also exploded when Bill Maher came out. People really don't like him. Here are a few examples...)

janiehaddad Bill Maher's wearing a Fruit Roll Up.

drew42e I wish he'd make his oscar disappear, up Mahers arse

radiocolin BIll Maher, shut the fuck up. You're an asshole.

But what makes following a live event special? Well it's not so much the constant tweets, it's the comraderie one feels with the people you choose to follow and the people that are choosing to follow you. It's like MST3K - on a really large scale, or hanging out with people at a bar drunkenly insulting all the pretty people on the boob tube (speaking of boob tube - Sarah Jessica Parker - thanks for bringing your gigantic puppies on stage with you. Delish).

However fake the feeling might be (because I honestly don't believe Richard Roeper was reading all my comments last night,) it's fun to believe it's a genuine sense of sharing. And since you get to control who you follow, you can create a small, social scene of like-minded individuals.

And then of course, there's the retweet - possibly the greatest thing you can get in the Twitter universe. Because everyone on Twitter not only has their own following island, it's easy to miss great lines that people tweet. But retweeting solves this. Say you have an especially funny line like Paul F. Tompkins had last night about seeing Kevin Kline:

Twitterkins Why is Sam Waterston wearing that fake mustache?

You can bet I'm retweeting that to my followers - and giving credit back to Paul F.

I think above everything else out there, Twitter has come closest to recreating a true social gathering for agoraphobics. And I mean that in the best sense possible. I mean where else could you feel such a close bond with Kevin Pollack?

kevinpollak Not for nothin', I've only been a twitter for 6 days, and because of it, this is the most fun I've EVER had watching this glorious parade.

Like I said before, I don't think Twitter is for everyone, and I don't think the collective group of people using it have completely figured it out yet. But after last night, I think we're getting closer.

And just because I had so much fun, here's a sampling of my favorite tweets last night with appropriate set up if needed. Yes, some of mine are included, because I'm an egomaniac...

scharpling phillip seymour hoffman equals a pile of soft serve vanilla ice cream wearing a hat.

Goose I'm rooting for Denise Richards in Dancing with the Stars because she out crazied Charlie Sheen

michael_bay Documentaries? Seriously? Those are not actually considered movies, are they?

(it's fake Michael Bay, but totally worth following)

After the Dancing With the Stars commercial aired...

TheCline - My long-time crush on Belinda Carlisle has just expired. She hit the wall and the wall fired back.

    After Will Smith fucked up...

TheCline - No one can tell me that Will Smith's "dynamite" line wasn't planned on his part. I've seen calculators that weren't as calculating.

After Slumdog won all the sound awards...

Goose Anyone else think Slumdog Millionaire was the first movie listed on the sound awards' ballot?

    During the Jerry Lewis tribute...

Goose That Man on the Wire guy is cracking up right now.

Goose when he passes - do we get the nazi clown movie released? That will set the bar on how much I wish him to die. DougBenson Ive only missed four! Who wants to fight?!

    On the death montage...

Caissie I think the In Memoriam montage should be introduced by the celebrity most likely to die next.

On the previous Best Actress winners on stage...

TheCline - Loren comes in as 3rd-most fuckable in that group.

When Winslet mentioned her shampoo bottle Oscar...

Goose What else did you do with that shampoo bottle Ms. Kate?

On Streep bringing her "daughter" as her "date"...

Goose are we certain that's Streep's daughter? Hiya - it's Oscars after dark.

When the best actors came out on stage...

Twitterkins Great idea, playing "The Magnificent Seven" theme to welcome FIVE PEOPLE.

TheCline - Frost/Nixon is Langella's second-best movie. The best? Masters of the Universe with Lundgren & Cox.

    On seeing Adrien Brody's hair...

    DougBenson Hair contest is over!

Twitterkins The Black Crowes dude LOVES Richard Jenkins!

DougBenson Ben Kingsley and Mickey Rourke should be Bond villains. In the same movie!

    When best picture was announced...

Goose Frost/Nixon probably won but Spielberg just wanted to see a bunch of Indian kids running around on stage.

After seeing the montage of upcoming movies in 2009...

TheCline - Can I pay someone to make sure I never see "Old Dogs", even accidentally?

So if you've made it to here, and chuckled a couple times, I'd recommend you head to Twitter and work on who you want to follow. And if you didn't, well, you can always get your entertainment from our blog.

Podcast 10.009 Recap -- Pics, Vids, Links, and More!

After more aborted beginnings than a Planned Parenthood yard sale, The Popcorn Trick finally started spurting digital chatter into your collective podholes. To ease us back into things, we tackled some broad topics and even a few topics about broads.

    Intro:

10+ days after the Popcorn Trick and most of their fanbase attended the Drive-By Truckers show, we kicked off the show with a live recording from that show, as captured in this video:

In case you haven't already, you can check out Goose's review of the show and my treatise on what it meant for the future of the Truckers.

As the music faded, we seamlessly rejoined the light banter our fans have come to know and envy. And we totally didn't have a better opening segment deleted due to technical difficulties, in case you were wondering.

    The Best

5 months between podcasts, and we both went with something fresh in our memories for our respective The Bests.

I kicked things off recounting a late-night trip to an apparently legendary jazz club north of Harlem (not really Upper West Side as I initially though) called St. Nick's Pub (also this). Drinks were shared, stories told, business cards swapped, sandwiches made, and other people laid.

    An exterior shot:

    A little Latin flavor:

Not great video, but this is a decent approximation of what I remember in terms of music and visibility:

Jayne Kennedy's daughter doing some jazz vocals:

After trying to sow seeds of distrust between me and my alleged girlfriend, Goose went on to detail his The Best. You can't go wrong with the mad genius that is R. Kelly. Especially on The Popcorn Trick.

This is Kels' latest video, or as it some day may be known, Exhibit A:

A little taste of the brilliance of Trapped in the Closet:
    And then,this:

    Musical Interlude

We kept it broad, and directly in Goose's wheelhouse by going with songs that have horns in them. All of them, in some form or another can be listened to via this here thing:

    podcast 10

    Other stuff:

    • Good Onion article (mentioned by me in a deleted scene) about songs nearly ruined by saxophone.
    • Marah doing Can't Hardly Wait (sans horns):
    • Fathead has a reunion show 1/24/09 at the North Star
    • More info on the Elephant 6 collective, which includes one of Goose's choices (Neutral Milk Hotel)
    • Neutral Milk Hotel
      • Weird MS Paint video for an NMH song:
      • NMH's Jeff Mangum doing Holland, 1945:
    • Beck doing "Debra" live
    • Trailer for documentary (Dig!) about the Dandy Warhols & the Brian Jonestown Massacre:
    • Spiritualized
      • Live version of "Come Together" from earlier this year :

      • John Prine's "Sam Stone", which had a few lyrics borrowed for "Come Together"
    • Phil Collins
      • I couldn't find any clips of him acting, but here's what he looked like when he was on Miami Vice and what he sounded like when he was singing songs from Buster:

    Underrated Hotties

We kept it broad, this time going with the vague concept of "Underrated Hot Chicks". Whether it was someone well known but under-lusted-after or someone who is obviously hot, but less famous, these are some of the people we would love to handcuff to our mental radiator.

    • Angela from the Office
    • Christa Miller

    • Maura Tierney
    • Jordana Brewster (DEBS - other chick)

    • Jill Ritchie (from D.E.B.S, Arrested Development, and being Kid Rock's sister)
    • Cobie Smulders
    • Jenny Lewis

    • Michelle Obama
    • Mary Steenburgen
    • Diane Kruger
    • Dana Delaney
    Enjoy!
