Cool Shit 1/16

"I went to an illegal pig-killing party." If you know me at all, you know I can't pass up a headline like that.

So the Oscar nominations were announced yesterday... over the years I have come to the realization list of 27 movies/performances that weren't nominated, but maybe had some merit.
that the Oscars really don't capture the best of the Hollywood process, so while I'll watch the broadcast, I won't put much stock into the choices. The system is broken, with the campaigning freezing out movies that should be nominated. Never mind the fact that there are stories that voters don't even watch the movies they have to decide on. Here's a

Listen fuck faces, what you do or don't do with your cups of weak-watered Swiss Miss hot chocolate on a daily basis is not my concern, but I WILL NOT be accused of not at least providing you with ways to make your hot chocolate the drink of kings.

The Daily Dot takes a look at the weird bias the Intercept has with Serial, and looks at what is being called "adversarial journalism" - something I'm sure we'll hear more about with the increased prevalence of the internet in our lives.

Oh, hey thanks Steven Soderbergh, for taking time out of your busy schedule and recutting that mediocre movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Mild spoiler for Hannibal, the best television show on television. Not sure how I feel about this news, but I am all in so whatever.

Let's not be too hard on these QVC hosts not really knowing what the moon is. Isn't it torture enough to be working at QVC?

Be part of the decision-making process as to what new show Amazon will order to series.

If you're an Avengers fan, and can't wait for the movie, this annotated trailer will help satiate your hunger:

Cool Shit 8/11

Listen, there is nothing to suggest Yellowstone's super volcano is going to erupt anytime soon. The road closures are relatively common, and the bison migration was not true. At least that's what they want you to think.

Any article that includes "We may have emerged from a black hole in a higher-dimension universe," is going to get linked here.

Ten of the world's great wonders...and the secrets behind them.

Steven Soderbergh is doing it his way.

Enjoy the history of Disneyworld's Haunted Mansion. Arguably its greatest attraction.

Cool Shit 6/18

That there's an audience for the Expendables 3 is kinda worrisome to me.

Danger Mouse is coming back! And if you aren't familiar with Dangermouse, I feel bad for you.

New Guardians of the Galaxy trailer. I have to imagine this film is not going to do well. I hope I'm wrong, but something tells me it's just too balls out crazy for our generic public.

Survival tips for different situations. Because you know you're going to push the limit trying to reach that bag of Hot Fries out of the vending machine at work.

How do you get your generic alternative rock song attention? Make an awesome music video with real optical illusions. (I actually enjoy that OK Go is trying different things with different mediums, and don't believe they get enough credit as artists in general).

New series coming to Showtime. The Knick. Looks like it's going to be about crazy surgical procedures from a turn-of-the-century hospital in New York. Starring Clive Owen, and created by Steven Soderbergh.

Cool Shit 5/24

Look for a whole Arrested Development post coming a bit later today...

Looking for something to do this weekend? How about enjoying a television marathon with these underrated shows you most likely have never heard of.

Seems like Gillian Anderson is having a bit of a resurgence.

Steven Soderbergh, retired film director turned internet entrepreneur? (Seriously, his website is weird, and not what you'd expect from an award winning director. I especially enjoy the "booze" section.)

Oh good lord, this After Earth movie seems WAY too involved to be any good.

Hmmm, I wonder if the location of the next Winter Olympic games will affect my ebay bidding on event tickets.

This look at what former stars of Lost are doing now isn't just interesting to see what the actors are doing, it's fun to try and remember what happened to their characters on Lost. And then you can relive the hatred you had for the series finale.

Cool Shit 5/1

Here are some pictures that may make your stomach drop.

A transcript of Steven Soderbergh's "State of the Cinema" opening/rant at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Coupled with the news of his retirement from filmmaking, this screams midlife crisis.

I'm shocked a sit com heavily involving Hitler didn't garner a larger audience.

Here's a track-by-track review of the new Daft Punk album.

Time Lapse! This time of Death Valley...

There are plenty of terrorists out there still just as dangerous as Osama Bin Laden was...

Here'a cool photo set of things rockstars have listed in their riders. To visualize it gives it some unexpected humor.

Cool Shit 1/29

Cool list of things you (probably) didn't know about from famous movies.

If you're a Whose Line Is It Anyway fan, you'll want to see who actually won the show. Of course, I don't think this takes the British show into account at all, as Tony Slattery is the obvious true winner. (Paul Merton was my favorite though.) Here's an episode with both Slattery and Merton:
