Cool Shit 2/28

Previously unheard Led Zeppelin tracks!

In honor of the Oscars this weekend, here's a look at the previous 85 Oscar winners ranked overall. Pretty sure there would be no debate about this list!

This alleged video of Supreme Court proceedings isn't exciting in and of itself, but it does raise awareness to the fact that it is illegal to video record the Supreme Court, which I feel is an antiquated law. After all, the proceedings are open to the public, so it's not a case of privacy or security. Perhaps we should allow recordings, to get a better understanding of the laws of this country?

Your True Detective links for the day! First, a theory on the possible ending, which I won't call a spoiler since it's just a theory, but it's decent; second, an interview with the creator of the show; and finally a look at the group behind the song played during the opening credits.

This is an awesome look back at the documentary American Movie. And if you haven't seen it, you definitely should. There's probably no better movie about making a movie in the 90s than American Movie.

Cool Shit 10/9

Cool project - a group of "creative types" drop out of society for a bit and set off to hike the John Muir trail, and allow it to inspire them. This is the documentary they came back with.

So you may think knitting is boring, but know that Norway does not. Not by a long shot. What? Oh you thought I was talking about actually knitting? No, I'm talking about watching knitting. For five continuous hours. Norway does not think that is boring.

While obviously fake, this video takes ping pong to a whole new level. And I love the swedishness of it. All of it.

Thinking about doing a Tough Mudder anytime soon? Make sure you read the whole waiver, and know what you're getting yourself into.

What could possibly be better than wearing a watch that will count down the seconds until you die?

Cool Shit 8/29

Clearing up the shit out there about PCP. In my research for adding this link (yes, I do research) I found the slang terms for PCP, in case during your Labor Day weekend you need a pick me up...

Angel Dust
Amoeba
Amp
Belladonna
Animal Trank
Zoom
Peace Pills
Boat
Sherm Sticks
Super Grass
STP
Embalming fluid

I wonder if hijinks ensue in the funeral home when the mortician's assistant happens to be a street-wise teenager and is asked for more embalming fluid. My guess is yes.

I so want this to be a completely true story, with no sarcasm or trolling. I don't want to find out later that Mr. Sheen was on drugs, or that he was just fucking around with the media. I want him to be honest to goodness hunting for a half-man half otter creature in Alaska. Please.

Slow motion in a movie can really punctuate a moment. But I'm not sure these are the ten "Best" uses of it. Of course, our source here is Esquire, so...

Yesterday, I gave you a glimpse of the upcoming Oscar season. Today, I offer you a glimpse of the upcoming music releases for the Fall.

Speaking of yesterday, here's part two of the Action Park legend...

The Most Insane Amusement Park Ever - Part 2 of 2 by insane-amusement-park

Big news for Luther fans...apparently it's being turned into a movie. Although, apparently it's going to be a prequel which, well - I've never been a big prequel fan. A prequel feels as though they force things in to make things you've already seen make more sense, in places where it doesn't really matter. Anyway, if you have never even heard of Luther, it's a British (BBC) television series starring Idris Elba as a London detective. The first two seasons are streaming right now. You should watch it just to see Elba's natural British accent, which will only make you more amazed at his Wire performance.

Cool Shit 4/12

So east coasters, get ready for the cicada orgies this summer!

Terrance Malick (a film director if you don't know) apparently is pretty divisive when it comes to opinions about his films.

Just in time for summer, your own mead-making kit! From Williams & Sonoma of course, but what else screams "ancient, most likely awful tasting alcoholic swill" than them?

Spotify is awesome if you're music fan, and now it can be awesomer with these tips and tricks.

I'm a huge Ricky Jay fan, so I'm excited about this documentary on him. You may recognize him from his acting turns in David Mamet films, but he's also one of the best magicians around.

An in-depth look and breakdown of sampling in the music industry.

I can only strive to have a cool moniker such as, "The Mountain Man of Southern Utah."

Cool Shit 4/11

A couple new looks at the new Arrested Development promotions.

Books you might not know that have sequels.

New Zealand is cool. Time lapse videos are cool. When you put them together, you have double cool.

A look at Star Wars action figures as though they were from a Russ Meyer film. Commissioned by Patton Oswalt! (Really, I have no idea what's going on)

There were some weird television series spin-offs through the years.

What's that, you say? You wish you could take existing Google Street View photography and create your own time lapse movies? Well, ok.

Here's an example of what the hell I'm talking about:

Ok. Where to begin with this one...it's a documentary called Sirius - which is not about the satellite radio company but: well, I'll just offer you the first line of the movie to help explain it:

"The existence of UFOs has been known for millennia..."

And from there, it only gets crazier. Seriously - each frame of this trailer is crazier than the previous one.

April 22 can't get here fast enough.

Cool Shit 3/14

While I'm questioning the validity of some of these (after all, we do live in the age of Photoshop) they still are a great assortment of perfectly time photos.

Be careful when you go abroad. Especially so if you're a successful businessman.

Who never had a dream to be a deep well diver?

In my top five of places/times I would head to would be hanging out with Michael Caine in the 60s.

A possible answer to what's been plaguing all of our minds for so long: what is the meaning behind Britney Spears' video Toxic?

What if we didn't need the Papal enclave because the real pope didn't resign? Because the real pope might be living in the midwest of America. Hey, it's a theory. And here's a documentary about that theory...

Cool Shit 3/1

What I want to know is, how did the Girls Gone Wild franchise get 16 million dollars in the hole?

A story of the hunt for a Californian serial killer who was never caught. Yet, justice still might be served.

Always fidgeting because you don't know how long your food will keep? Fidget no more.

Looking for something to kill some time on a Friday? How about a documentary on the behind the scenes production of Empire Strikes Back - a documentary few people have seen...

Just because you've died doesn't mean you cant't still do something cool.

"Down with the clown 'til you're dead in the ground."

American Juggalo... a film that looks into what it means to be a fan of the band Insane Clown Posse, filmed at the annual Gathering of the Jugglalos.

I'm really not sure what to think. Much like the brilliant documentary Capturing the Friedmans, once you decide to take the trip down the rabbit hole, the ride continues to get freakier and freakier. I'll let you pass your own judgement, however.

Please be advised, there's plenty of profanity and nudity. But no "bigotory." (Ok, so that was a little judgement.)

New Documentary about...Parking Lot Attendants

Cameras are everywhere, and everyone has cameras. And that's why we get documentaries about parking lot attendants...

Is it interesting? I have no idea. I'm sure the interviewed parking lot attendants have a cool story or two about society and its parking habits. And I'm sure if I stumbled across it with no pretenses or knowledge of it some night on cable I would watch it and enjoy it. But I'm not sure the world is asking for this to be made.

Still, if you are interested, check out the website here and maybe buy the film.

Guinea Pigs. Cocaine. Wigs.

I'd like to meet Chad Holt, the subject of the documentary, Total Badass. Not hang out with him, mind you, but meet him.

And you thought there was nothing more that could be mined out of the world of bowling after Kingpin and The Big Lebowski.

You were wrong.

This man is brilliant. I only hope that the limo is his car and not his job. That would be the cherry on this sundae of a movie.
